What goes wrong with auto glass, and what can be repaired?
The short answer

Most vehicle auto glass repair work is one of a handful of recognisable failures: star breaks, bullseye chips, long cracks, edge cracks, stress cracks and shattered tempered side glass. Type and position decide whether auto glass repair for cars is possible, and whether the job is auto glass replacement repair instead; length alone rarely does.

What the numbers are

Figures as cited in Sources below
Damage typeUsually repairable?Why
Bullseye chip (under ~a quarter)YesRegular cone fills predictably with resin
Star break with short legsYesRepairable while legs stay short and central
Crack up to ~3 inYesWithin the general repair threshold
Crack 3–6 inDependsJudgement call on depth and position
Crack over 6 inNoPast the general threshold
Any damage at the glass edgeNoEdge carries the structural bond
Damage in driver’s line of sightNoRepair leaves slight optical distortion
Shattered tempered side glassNoTempered glass fails completely; cannot be filled

What is a star break, and can auto car glass repair stop it spreading?

A star break is an impact point with short legs radiating out. Resin repair stops the spread while the legs are short and away from the edge — and it spreads readily if left, because the legs concentrate stress and thermal cycling extends them.

A defroster blasted onto cold glass is a common way to turn a small star into a long crack overnight.

Why is a bullseye the easiest glass repair auto glass repair case?

Because the geometry is regular. A bullseye is a clean circular cone of separated glass around the impact point, so resin fills it predictably and a finished repair is often hard to find.

Why is a bullseye the easiest glass repair auto glass repair case?

Under about the size of a quarter, away from the driver’s view and away from the edge, this is the clearest case for repair over replacement.

Why does edge damage mean replacement rather than auto glass replacement repair?

Because the perimeter is where the urethane bond carries structural load. The windshield helps retain the roof in a rollover and gives the passenger airbag a surface to deploy against, and both depend on the bond at the edge.

Edge damage compromises that, which is why it means replacement regardless of how short it looks.

What is a stress crack with no impact point?

A crack that appears without anything striking the glass, usually from a rapid temperature change or flex on an already-stressed pane. There is no chip for resin to bond into, so it is a replacement case.

It is also a signal: glass that cracks without impact was often already carrying stress from a poor previous fit.

Why does side glass shatter instead of cracking?

Because side and quarter glass is tempered, not laminated. Tempered glass is heat-treated so it fails all at once into small blunt fragments — safer in a collision, but it means repair is not possible.

Why does side glass shatter instead of cracking?

The windshield is laminated: two plies bonded to a plastic interlayer, which is why it cracks and holds together.

How it works

From “there’s a crack” to “it’s done”

Four steps, and no obligation at any of them.

  1. 1

    Tell us what happened

Where the damage is, how big it is, and whether it sits in your line of sight.

  2. 2

    Repair or replace

Short chips away from the driver’s view can often be repaired. Long or edge damage cannot.

  3. 3

    Check the insurance angle

Three states waive the deductible outright. Elsewhere it depends what you opted into.

  4. 4

    Matched to a local company

You get a licensed local company, their quote, and the calibration question answered up front.

How we work

What to expect from this site

Every number on this site has a source and a date attached — and where the sources disagree, we say so instead of picking the convenient one.

01

Answer first, then detail

Each page opens by answering its own question in a couple of sentences. The detail comes after, for anyone who wants it.

02

Ranges, not fake precision

Glass pricing genuinely varies. We publish the range our sources support rather than one confident number that fits nobody.

03

We say when repair beats replacement

A repairable chip should be repaired. That is the cheaper outcome and it keeps your factory seal intact.

04

We are not the contractor

We do not fit glass, so we have nothing to gain from talking you into replacing it. The work is done by licensed local companies.

Questions

Frequently asked

The questions drivers actually ask about glass damage, cost and cover.

Will a small chip spread if I leave it?

Often. Chips concentrate stress and temperature cycling extends them. A repairable chip left through a winter frequently becomes a non-repairable crack.

Can a crack in the driver’s line of sight be repaired?

Generally no. Even a clean repair leaves slight optical distortion, which is not acceptable in the primary view — so it is a replacement case even when the length would qualify.

Can shattered side glass be repaired?

No. Side glass is tempered and fails completely, so replacement is the only option. Much of the work is clearing fragments from the door cavity, regulator track and interior.

Is a crack with no impact point still repairable?

No. Without an impact cone there is nothing for resin to fill, so a stress crack means replacement.

Does hail damage always mean a new windshield?

Not always. Hail commonly leaves chips and short cracks that are repairable if they are clear of the driver’s view and the glass edge.
